What Is e-Stewards Certification?

e-Stewards certification is an audited certification program incorporating ISO 14001 for recycling businesses that conduct operations in electronics recycling, including processing, asset management, and refurbishment schemes.

The e-Stewards standard allows recycling organizations to reuse and re-purpose suitable technology effectively while safely disposing of toxic e-waste.

Organizations certified with the e-Stewards accreditation are proficient in upholding ethical standards that firmly support labor and environmental laws, entailing:

  • Safeguarding customers’ private data.
  • Ensuring top-quality operational health by protecting employees from exposure to toxic dust and fumes.
  • Prohibiting the use of prison populations handling toxic e-waste.
  • Halting the disposal of waste in urban landfills or incinerators.
  • Banning exports of dangerous e-waste to underdeveloped countries.
  • Forbidding child labor and sweatshops.

Amtivo, formerly Orion Registrar, is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) for e-Stewards.

How to Become Certified

It’s an easy process to become e-Stewards certified.

Implementing an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) is the first step to achieving e-Stewards accreditation for your organization.

Once in place, an initial certification audit will take place, and Amtivo’s experienced auditors will assess whether your organization complies with e-Stewards standards through an assessment of your EMS.

Our auditors will provide a clear gap assessment and recommend any improvements. After you have implemented these changes, a second audit will take place. If your business meets the requirements for the international standard, you will be accredited e-Stewards certification.

This certification is yours to market to your customers and to highlight your commitment to conducting e-waste recycling in an environmentally aware, progressive, and ethical manner.

Identify Gaps

Referred to as a “Stage one assessment”, our auditor will conduct an initial review of your management system to determine if the core requirements of the standard are being met. We will provide a detailed report outlining the areas you need to focus on in order to comply with the requirements.

In-Depth Review

When you are ready, an auditor will conduct a “Stage two assessment” to establish if your organization meets the standard’s requirements. We review actions taken to address findings raised at Stage One, and our auditor will make a recommendation as to whether certification can be issued based on the audit outcomes.

Certification Issued

Following a review by our Compliance Team, a decision will be made as to whether your certification can be issued.

e-Stewards FAQs

What is the e-Stewards Initiative?

The e-Stewards Initiative states that no harmful or illegal e-waste will be exported to developing nations, dumped in landfills, or recycled using forced or child labor. The 2009 scheme was started by the Basel Action Network (BAN) as a response to global demand for cleaner and more effective resolutions to disposing and recycling e-waste.

How long will the e-Stewards certification take?

The certification timeframe depends on various factors, such as whether a company already holds an ISO 14001 certification as an effective Environmental Management System will already exist, saving time and costs. Preparing for the first audit means businesses must have all the suitable documentation available for the audit for up to six months. Timing also depends on the number of employees who need training. For more information and advice regarding certification times, contact a member of our team at Amtivo, formerly Orion Registrar, today.

Do all company locations need to be certified in e-Stewards?

All e-waste recycling companies within the US which reside under the same ownership have to be certified within 18 months of the first facility obtaining certification. If an organization has additional facilities across the US, it will need to be audited within an 18-month timeframe. Amtivo can help this process run smoothly. Contact us today for more information.

What is the e-Stewards 4.1 upgrade?

Certifications will remain valid under Version 4.0 until the recycler completes a successful audit for transition to Version 4.1, after which a certificate to Version 4.1 will be issued or the end of the entire transition period, whichever comes first.

Certified e-Stewards Recyclers that have surveillance or recertification audits scheduled within the two-month implementation period may choose to be audited to either Version 4.0 or 4.1 of the e-Stewards Standard. However, after 22 April 2022 (two months after the publication date of Version 4.1), all audits must be conducted to Version 4.1. If a recertification is issued to Version 4.0, the expiration date on the certificate must be no later than 22 April 2023.

When will Version 4.0 certifications expire?

As of 22 April 2023 (14 months after the issue date of Version 4.1), Version 4.0 will be withdrawn by the Basel Action Network, and all accreditations and certifications to Version 4.0 will be removed and become invalid.
